Last week, the Abbe School of Photonics hosted its much-anticipated EMIMEO Summer School, which was a great success. This vibrant event, held from August 26th to August 30th, 2024, brought together students, researchers, and professionals from around the world for a week of intensive learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Alltogether, the School counted more than 70 participants.
The Summer School featured a dynamic program that included Master's thesis presentations, scientific talks, and hands-on workshops. Participants had the opportunity to delve into advanced topics in photonics, ranging from microwave radar technologies to quantum metamaterials, thanks to the diverse expertise of our guest speakers. Notably, the event included practical workshops at the Lichtwerkstatt Makerspace, where students engaged in innovative projects such as laser cutting and 3D printing.
We were particularly thrilled to welcome a large number of international participants from countries across the globe, including Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Kazakhstan, and many others. Most noteworthy was the visit of a delegation of students of staff from the Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine, an associated partner in the program. The diverse backgrounds of our attendees fostered a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives, greatly enhancing the overall experience. Many participants commented on Jena's hospitality and modern facilities, noting how welcomed and comfortable they felt throughout their stay.
Beyond the academic program, the Summer School provided ample opportunities for networking and cultural exchange. Highlights included a guided tour of the ZEISS facilities, a hike to the Friedensberg, and various social events like the students’ barbecue and a farewell dinner at the traditional brewery restaurant "Papiermühle." These activities not only showcased the beauty and culture of Jena but also helped to create lasting connections among participants.
We are proud of the success of this year’s EMIMEO Summer School and grateful to all our speakers, organizers, and participants for their enthusiasm and contributions. We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence and fostering a global microwave, electronics and photonics community in future editions of the Summer School. The next one will be upcoming in 2025, in one of the cities of our partners in France, Italy or Spain.
